Hydrochlorothiazide

Patient Information Leaflet: Hydrochlorothiazide and skin risk

What is Hydrochlorothiazide?

Hydrochlorothiazide is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention. It is a diuretic, which help the body remove excess salt and water. In the UK it is often prescribed in a combination tablet with another blood pressure medication. Examples include Cozaar-comp and Innozide.

What’s the Risk?

Research has suggested that there is a small increase in the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer in patients taking Hydrochlorothiazide. This would include Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), but there does not appear to be an increase in the risk of the most serious form of skin cancer – Malignant Melanoma.

We think that the reason this occurs is because Hydrochlorothiazide has photosensitizing properties, which means it can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) rays. This increased sensitivity may contribute to the development of skin cancer over time.

Sun safety

If you are taking hydrochlorothiazide, make sun safety a priority:

• Regularly check your skin for any new or changing skin lesions, or unusual spots or moles.

• Limit how much time you spend in the sun

• Use sun cream (SPF 30 or higher)

• Wear a wide brimmed hat

Should You Stop Taking Hydrochlorothiazide?

Do not stop taking hydrochlorothiazide without consulting your doctor. The benefits of controlling blood pressure and preventing fluid retention outweigh the risks for most patients. If you have concerns, fill in a triage form and speak to one of the team. If you notice any suspicious skin changes, come and see us for a review.
